Why cartoon illustrations make complex topics easier to understand

From the picture superiority effect to dual coding, here's why cartoon explainers help people understand and remember ideas — and how to use them on social media.

Scroll through any feed and the posts that make you stop are rarely walls of text. Colourful cartoon scenes, expressive characters and simple visual metaphors grab attention — and, crucially, help ideas stick. Here's why.

Pictures are remembered better than words

Psychologists call it the picture superiority effect: people tend to remember images better than words. Dr John Medina sums it up in Brain Rules — add a picture to information and recall after three days jumps from around 10% to 65%.

Two channels beat one

Dual coding theory, developed by psychologist Allan Paivio, suggests we process verbal and visual information through separate but connected channels. When a short headline is paired with a matching illustration, people get two routes to the same idea — which makes it easier to understand and recall.

Cartoons simplify on purpose

Unlike photos, cartoons strip away irrelevant detail and exaggerate what matters. A worried face, a towering stack of papers, a glowing phone — each element is there for a reason. That focus makes cartoons perfect for explaining abstract ideas like emotions, money or science.

Characters create connection

A recurring character gives your audience someone to root for. When that character procrastinates, panics or celebrates, viewers recognise themselves — and relatable content is content people share.

How to use cartoon explainers on social media

  • Pick everyday scenarios your audience lives through.
  • Use visual metaphors for abstract ideas (a 'task monster' for overwhelm).
  • Keep a consistent character and palette across a carousel.
  • Let the illustration carry the meaning — keep text minimal.
